I read the reviews complaining about the customer service, but gave them a chance based on the apparently new ownership. sad to say the customer service is still awful. i came in with a specific guitar recommendation from my instructor and the guy not only tried to talk me into a different brand, but even tried to talk me into getting a bass guitar instead of what i actually asked for. on top of that, when i said my kid plays guitar, he immediately translated “kid” to “son.” this is not a place where i have any interest in doing business.

After researching keyboards and synthesizers, i went to main street music to check out their inventory. they had a selective range of high quality options, including roland, korg, and nord. the consultation was very helpful and i am delighted with my final choice. thanks to the folks at main street music - there are a number of big music warehouse style chains out there, but this is a really nice smaller diamond in the rough.

Super racist!!!
peter told me to stay away from him and asked me really inappropriate questions about my stay in the states. to all of my asian, especially east asian, brothers and sisters, do not go there at any cost.

Run, don't walk, as far away as you can from this place.  if you don't you will be the victim of a concert you didn't sign up for,  (just wanted to get an instrument fixed, as advertised and get out.   i brought my own strings and the guy had no clue how to fix the instrument and wasted my time trying to. he then suggested i should learn guitar and wanted me to sign up for guitar lessons. no thanks, i'm good. he then rips out his guitar and starts playing "guess what song i'm playing" and when he forgets the lyrics, i supply them. what the fuck am i doing here? did i sign up for an open mic show? is this guy tripping?

as an added bonus, they ask all kinds of personal questions as you try to figure out your easiest escape.  there is a guy out front that keeps on walking back and forth in front of the store.  this is creepy. they push the guitar lessons again and find a way to insult me, maybe because i don't want to take his guitar lessons? then he gives me his number so i can be sure to call to sign up for the lessons. with you? are you out of your mind? yes, you are out of your mind. and i know the safest thing for me to do with someone like that, is not to get angry, just humor him and gtf outta there asap.  longer than i thought it would take, but i'm still here living to tell the tale.  and i won't be back.

Friendly staff repaired my guitar for a fair price and within an amount of time that was reasonable and also which was the turnaround time they forecasted to me. i recommend this store to anyone looking for instruments or instrument repairs and who is interested in supporting a local business. based on my experience with the first time i had them repair my guitar i am now going back to have them do it again after recently dropping it.

_______

edit: my initial review above was very positive because although i did have a couple 'off' interactions with main st music's staff during my first visit, i am always inclined to give the benefit of the doubt and see the positive aspects of an experience particularly when working with local businesses, which i try to support whenever possible even if it means longer wait-times or slightly greater costs. however, i'm updating this review based on my second experience visiting this store. the staff at this store actually did serious damage to my guitar in their attempt to repair it. i found it sketchy when they consistently insisted i pay in cash. when i tested my guitar out after the "repair", it made a rattling noise, which i did not comment on directly because before i could even ask about this noise, the staffmember aggressively said "it's not rattling!" - suffice it to say, i was not super comfortable raising the issue at that point, and took my guitar elsewhere to be evaluated. i would not trust them with my instrument in the future. could add more detail... but perhaps if you are on the fence you should bring one of your less-treasured instruments in for a tune-up and form your own opinion!

He charged me $10 for sheet music that retails for  $3.95 which i didn't realize until i left. the entire experience in this store was uncomfortable and bizarre. he also tried to charge me $10 for 4 pieces of paper taped together and insisted it had at least 20 songs in it, despite being 4 pieces of paper. you will be asked for your home address and phone number. not to mention, all of the positive reviews are men...
